Integrated T1 Services Buyer’s Guide

What are Integrated T1 Services?

Integrated T1 services are carrier-managed solutions that provide you with both voice and data capabilities over a single T1 line. Instead of using two different providers and two different technologies to manage your voice and data needs, you can use a sole integrated T1 service provider to handle both. Integrated T1 services can actually be used to consolidate Internet, long distance, local voice, and toll free plans, so the same company can manage all of your telecommunications services. T1 technology has been widely used for over 20 years, and it’s become standardized and commoditized, so providers are well equipped to handle the installation process as well as day-to-day operations. In fact, if there is an intermittent problem (as there are with all telecommunications technologies) the carrier will take care of it for you, often before you’ve even recognized anything is wrong.

A single T1 line provides you with a capacity equivalent to 24 POTS (plain old telephone service) lines. T1 is also a dedicated service, so like POTS you’re not sharing it with anyone else. This also gives T1 a level of reliability and security for Internet usage that isn’t available with dialup, cable or DSL, which do not offer dedicated service. You can utilize a T1 line specifically for voice and another specifically for data. However, if your company doesn’t need that level of bandwidth, integrated T1 services enable you to use a single line for both voice and data operations. This provides you with all of the speed, power, and reliability that T1 has to offer, but it will save you a considerable amount of money.

The technical aspects of T1 can seem complicated, but the process is actually pretty straightforward. Voice calls are made through a PBX (private branch exchange) and data transfers move through a router as they normally would. However, before making their way out into the world, both are converted to digital signals and transmitted over a single T1 line.
