VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): Technology that allows voice conversations to be transferred over a data network such as the Internet.

VoIP continues to be one of the hottest buzz words in the telecommunications industry. VoIP has already made its way into the private consumer market with companies such as Skype and Vonage marketing their “lower long distance rates” and additional specialty services to people who’ve grown weary of traditional long distance costs but don’t want to rely completely on their cell phones.

The Net Neutrality debate that continues to rage on Capitol Hill and in the offices of major telecommunications players has brought even more attention to VoIP. It has also given rise to a legion of near rabid supporters who believe companies like AT&T are purposefully trying to limit the affect VoIP can have on the industry. For their part, VoIP advocates don’t simply focus on the reduced prices they can offer, they also believe that VoIP has the ability to harness the power of the Internet to take long distance and telecommunications services to an entirely new level. They see VoIP as a technology that will allow users to communicate easily no matter where they are, while taking advantage of perks such as “find me features,” “one call group communication,” and much more.

So, what’s the verdict? Is VoIP the inexpensive, multi-faceted business long distance alternative that its supporters believe it to be? No. Not yet anyway. At this point, VoIP has only truly been effective for enterprises that full-time IT departments who can commit a significant amount of resources to managing VoIP technology. There are still quality issues that have to be worked with, and many have come to question the actual savings that VoIP provides.

There is hope that in the future SMBs might be able to reap the full benefits of VoIP, but in the meantime you can still purchase the bandwidth necessary for VoIP at relatively low costs, while you explore the other business long distance services that can better suit the small or medium sized business owner.
